Partnering with United Technology Service to improve surveillance at Robins Air Force Base
The U.S. Air Force at Robins Air Force Base in Houston County, Georgia, needed to modernize their 402nd maintenance operation center while building a new video surveillance system to improve situational awareness across the base. The operation center serves as the nerve center for dispatch control and radio communications for the 402nd maintenance wing—a critical 24/7 operation supporting the base's mission readiness.
Winsted has a great, straightforward team. They worked with us from developing CAD drawings to product design and construction.
The challenge
Operating around the clock, the facility required technical equipment that could support sustained operator performance while meeting strict government standards. The project had to comply with World Building Design Guides (WBDG), Unified Facilities Criteria, and GSA's P100 Design standards, which govern comfort requirements for control room operators in federal facilities.
"We wanted a more flexible facility," explained Carlos Rivera, President of United Technology Service, the systems integrator partnering with the Air Force on the project. "Being that it's a 24/7 operation, we wanted to offer the sit/stand option for ergonomic reasons."
The solution
Working with their systems integrator, the Air Force turned to Winsted—a global leader in mission-critical control room solutions with over 55 years of experience serving military and government clients. Winsted's team collaborated closely to design and implement a series of Impulse Dual Sit/Stand workstations specifically configured for the surveillance control room environment.
The Impulse Dual console series features two independently adjustable, ergonomically curved work surfaces that allow operators to seamlessly transition between sitting and standing positions. Each workstation includes electric-lift legs providing 30" to 46" height adjustment at the push of a button, supporting the health and alertness requirements of round-the-clock operations.
During the design phase, Winsted's engineers prioritized sightline optimization, ensuring that raised desks would not obstruct critical views when operators chose to stand. The workstations incorporated Winsted's Versa-Trak monitor mounting system for flexible display configuration and comprehensive cable management systems to maintain the clean, professional appearance required in military facilities.
"Winsted has a great, straightforward team," said Rivera. "They worked with us from developing CAD drawings to product design and construction."
Results and impact
The installation transformed the 402nd maintenance operation center into a modern, ergonomic workspace that enhances both operator comfort and operational efficiency. The sit/stand capability addresses the physical demands of extended surveillance operations, helping reduce operator fatigue and maintain alertness during critical missions.
Winsted's involvement extended beyond product delivery to include comprehensive design support and on-site installation assistance, ensuring seamless integration with the Air Force's existing systems and protocols.
"The users are ecstatic with the outcome," Rivera confirmed, highlighting the successful transformation of this mission-critical facility.
The project demonstrates Winsted's commitment to supporting military operations through innovative, ergonomic solutions that meet the demanding requirements of 24/7 command and control environments.
