Winsted Upgrades Security Operations for the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C.

Winsted transformed a cramped, makeshift security room at the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. into a modern, high-tech command center by resolving cable clutter, maximizing space, and prioritizing officer comfort.

CHALLENGE

Upgrading from Makeshift to Mission-Critical

The International Spy Museum required a surveillance control room that could efficiently serve as the central brains of their security operations, ensuring the safety of staff and all guests within the building. Their previous setup was highly makeshift, consisting merely of two standard desks pushed together in a space not originally intended to be a command center. This lack of proper console space forced operators to constantly move back and forth, which increased their response times to security situations.

The room also suffered from poor cable management and a highly inefficient use of space. A massive, loud equipment rack occupied a corner of the room, while cables were haphazardly taped across the floor.

The ultimate challenge was to find a solution that would reduce this physical clutter, provide a comfortable, dedicated space for the security officers, and reflect the cutting-edge, 21st-century aesthetic expected of a world-renowned spy museum.

"When I became a supervisor and this became my project, it was 'Let's make this a comfortable space for the officers', and Winsted was a key factor in making that come to life."

SOLUTION

Engineered for Operator Focus and Control

Winsted worked closely with the museum’s security team every step of the way to design a tailored solution that perfectly fit the physical constraints of their unique room. They adapted a standard console design, tailoring its size and shape for a perfect fit, while introducing sit-stand capabilities to create a much healthier and more comfortable daily environment for the operators.

To resolve the clutter and space limitations, Winsted implemented a CPU-integrated rack system located completely underneath the consoles. This condensed all the previously loud, space-consuming equipment into a clean, highly accessible layout that freed up half of the real estate within the command center.

The resulting workstation now serves as the robust backbone of the museum's security command center. By providing an organized, ergonomic, and impressive high-tech control space, Winsted empowered the officers to focus entirely on their surveillance monitors and efficiently manage the safety of the facility.

The results

A Command Center Worthy of the Secrets It Protects.

MAXIMIZED SPACE: Consolidating the servers under the desks freed up half of the room’s square footage and eliminated the loud equipment rack.

ENHANCED FOCUS: Clearing out physical clutter allows operators to focus entirely on their monitors without physical distractions or discomfort.

MODERN AESTHETIC: The 21st-century look of the consoles perfectly matches the cutting-edge brand of a world-renowned espionage museum.
